HD molecules at high redshift: cosmic ray ionization rate in the diffuse interstellar medium

چکیده
We present a systematic study of deuterated molecular hydrogen (HD) at high redshift, detected in absorption the spectra quasars. four new identifications HD lines associated with known $\rm H_2$-bearing Damped Lyman-$\alpha$ systems. In addition, we measure upper limits on HD$ column density twelve recently identified DLAs. find that detections have similar $N({\rm HD})/N(\rm H_2)$ ratios as previously found, further strengthening marked difference measurements through Galaxy. This is likely due to differences physical conditions and metallicity between local high-redshift interstellar media. Using measured HD})/N({\rm H_2})$ together priors UV flux ($\chi$) number densities ($n$), obtained from analysis H_2$ CI lines, are able constrain cosmic-ray ionization rate (CRIR, $\zeta$) for eight HD-bearing systems where $n$ $\chi$ available. significant dispersion $\zeta$, few $\times 10^{-18}$ s$^{-1}$ 10^{-15}$ s$^{-1}$. also $\zeta$ strongly correlates -- showing almost quadratic dependence, slightly $Z$, does not correlate $n$, which probably reflects connection cosmic rays star-forming regions.

Cosmic Ray Ionization of the Interstellar Medium
We consider a cosmic ray spectrum that is a power law in momentum down to a cutoff and derive a lower cutoff corresponding to Ekin ∼ (30− 60) MeV from the observed ionization rates in nearby diffuse clouds. While the real spectra of cosmic rays may not be so simple, we argue that one expects a substantial change in the spectra at such energies and that, at first approximation, a power law spect...
متن کاملMolecular hydrogen in the diffuse interstellar medium at high redshift
The physical conditions within damped Lyα systems (DLAs) can reveal the star formation history, determine the chemical composition of the associated ISM, and hence document the first steps in the formation of present day galaxies. Here we present calculations that self-consistently determine the gas ionization, level populations (atomic fine-structure levels and rotational levels of H2), grain ...
متن کاملThe Implications of a High Cosmic-ray Ionization Rate in Diffuse Interstellar Clouds
Diffuse interstellar clouds show large abundances of H3 which can be maintained only by a high ionization rate of H2. Cosmic rays are the dominant ionization mechanism in this environment, so the large ionization rate implies a high cosmic-ray flux, and a large amount of energy residing in cosmic rays. In this paper we find that the standard propagated cosmic-ray spectrum predicts an ionization...

We present the detection of deuterated molecular hydrogen (HD) in the remote Universe in a damped Lyman-α cloud at z abs = 2.418 toward the quasar SDSS J143912.04+111740.5. This is a unique system in which H 2 and CO molecules are also detected. The chemical enrichment of this gas derived from Zn ii and S ii is as high as in the Sun. We measure N(HD)/2N(H 2) = 1.5 +0.6 −0.4 × 10 −5 , which is s...
متن کاملH3 in Diffuse Interstellar Clouds: a Tracer for the Cosmic-ray Ionization Rate
Using high-resolution infrared spectroscopywe have surveyed twenty sight lines for H3 absorption. H þ 3 is detected in eight diffuse cloud sight lines with column densities varying from 0:6 ; 10 to 3:9 ; 10 cm . This brings to 14 the total number of diffuse cloud sight lines where H3 has been detected. These detections are mostly along sight lines concentrated in the Galactic plane but are well...
